Minor Injury Treatments At An Urgent Care

Minor injury treatment is often needed to address physical wounds that cannot be given attention at home. However, most times, minor injuries only require a visit to urgent care instead of the emergency room. Urgent care centers are a great resource to utilize when in need of treatment for a minor injury, injuries such as strains, breaks, cuts and burns. 

What can be treated at urgent care and how?

Outlined below are a few minor injury treatments that can be performed at urgent care. It can be helpful to review this information so that when an injury occurs, you will be appropriately prepared.

Cuts and lacerations

Cuts and lacerations require minor injury treatment from urgent care. Most deep cuts and lacerations require special care in order to heal properly. The physician may clean the wound, apply a medicinal application and then seal it with a bandage and wrap. 

Breaks or fractures

Another minor injury treatment that can be performed at urgent care is a broken or fractured bone. Breaks and fractures can be a serious injury; however, they often do not require emergency care. When visiting an urgent care center for a break or fracture, the damaged bone will be x-rayed and splinted by a physician. The x-rays show how serious the break or fracture is, and the splint is used to treat the problem. In some scenarios, the splint may be a custom-made cast; other times, more minor injuries may only require a wrapped splint. 

Sprains and strains

A very common minor injury that can be treated is the ankle sprain—i.e., muscle strain. Ankle sprains happen quite often and typically only require an x-ray and a wrap. The patient will then be advised to rest and use ice. In the case of muscle strains, the physician at urgent care may do an examination and then recommend at-home stretches. In other cases, a muscle-relaxing mediation may be prescribed. 

Burns

Burns can be extremely painful and serious if not treated appropriately. Burn debridement is one of the popular minor injury treatments performed at urgent care is. Treatment consists of removing dead skin, cleaning out the wound and wrapping it appropriately with an anti-bacterial medical application. 

Car accidents

Car accidents can vary from minor to major. Typically, if the accident is major, patients are taken to an emergency room. However, in most cases, the damage done is minor and causes things like whiplash, a cut or laceration, all of which can be treated at an urgent care center. 

Sport or activity injuries

Athletes are always having their minor injuries treated. Oftentimes, sports injuries fall into one of the listed minor injuries above. Many athletes break bones, sprain ankles or pull muscles that result in a need for minor injury treatment.
