The rhinovirus causes the common cold. It is a pathogen capable of making you miserable and forcing you to stay home for days. Understanding its symptoms can tell you to go to the urgent care facility early. If you want to know the common cold symptoms, here are the details.

Sneezing

An individual sneezes when there is irritation in the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. The body often sends inflammatory moderators when this happens. These substances cause blood vessels to leak and dilate, and mucus glands secrete mucous, causing irritation and sneezing.

Nasal congestion or runny nose

A stuffy nose is a combination of nasal congestion and a runny nose. These are the most common symptoms of the common cold. They occur because excess fluids cause the mucous membranes and blood vessels to swell. As a result, the nasal discharge thickens up and becomes greenish or yellowish in three days. A person may also experience a postnasal drip or when mucous drips from the nose down to the person’s throat.

A trip to the local urgent care facility is important if the common cold symptoms exceed ten days. By then, the discharge will become green or yellow and come with sinus pain and a terrible headache. A sinus infection may also develop.

Sore throat

A sore throat is a scratchy, dry, and itchy sensation in the throat, making eating and swallowing solid food challenging. These symptoms can result from the inflammation of tissues and could also come from postnasal drip. A person could also result from extended exposure to a dry and hot environment.

Cough

A common cold can come with a wet (productive) cough or a dry cough. The coughing is always the last symptom to fade. It can go on for one to three weeks. Going to an urgent care center is crucial for maintaining health if the coughing lasts for more than 10 days. This facility can help if the individual starts coughing up blood or a foul-smelling green or yellow mucous. Seeing a doctor should happen because of the following:

  • Worsening cough when lying down
  • Sudden bad cough
  • Cough of someone with swollen legs or a heart ailment
  • Cough with fever
  • Coughing with loud noise as the person breathes in
  • Sudden weight loss and coughing
  • Coughing of an infant less than three months old

Low-grade fever

Going through a common cold may involve suffering from a low-grade fever, a quick indication of an infection. A trip to the urgent care facility is an urgent matter if the fever reaches 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or even higher. Watery eyes can accompany fever. Sometimes, a common cold can occur with mild fatigue.
