Urgent Care

Should I Go to Urgent Care or the ER?

Wondering whether you should go to urgent care or the ER when you are injured? An urgent care center is a place where you can go to get treated for a variety of medical and health issues, especially when you are not able to make a same-day appointment with your primary care doctor. Urgent care centers are known for seeing patients who are in need of medical treatment or health care assistance on the same day, making them a convenient option.

Urgent care or the ER?

Learning when urgent care services or ER services are needed is a great idea, as you just never know when an emergency is going to happen. While many people think that an urgent or emergency medical problem that cannot be quickly seen by their primary care provider means they need to go to their local ER, this is not always the case. It is possible for them to visit an urgent care center, but only for addressing certain types of medical conditions.

When urgent care services are needed

Urgent care centers are a great option for those who are experiencing a nonemergency situation. Examples of nonemergency situations include cuts and scrapes, animal bites, ear pain, sinus pain, fever, allergies, rashes, minor burns, eye irritations, minor fractures, back pain, nausea, minor headaches, sore throat and cold or flu symptoms. When someone is in need of nonemergency services from an urgent care center, they can call the center and make a same-day appointment or they can simply walk into the center and expect to be seen within a short amount of time.

The majority of urgent care centers are open outside of normal business hours, as well as open during the weekends. This makes going to this type of facility much more convenient for those who experience a nonemergency situation at night or over the weekend, as the majority of doctor's offices are only open during normal business hours.

When ER services are needed

Going to a local ER is necessary when someone is experiencing a true emergency. Examples of emergency situations include extreme chest pain, having difficulty breathing, severely bleeding from an injury, experiencing a loss of vision, experiencing stroke symptoms and experiencing any type of head-related trauma.

An ER is always open. When someone is experiencing an emergency situation, they can feel confident that they can go to an ER for medical help at any time they are in need.
